I can only say that I for one am a fan of ERs, especially low ERs.
However, I completely agree with you that there is more than good technique to winning at backgammon. Some people just seem to be consistently winning a lot more than others, despite playing at roughly the same ERs.
All your points are valid, imo.
Especially the intimidation factor is important. Personally I think that a player like Karsten Bredahl wins an awful lot of matches because of his charisma, his subtle comments which plays with the mind of his opponents (and off course because of his good play).
