This is a typical situation I find myself in where my first choice is the correct play only to change my mind and eat lunch instead.
My first impression was to hop into the outfield for the reasons most of you gave. I was doing it instinctively without much thought.
Then I made the mistake of looking at the pip count and how I was trailing in the race. My limited bg understanding told me to stay back for contact and abandon the hop.
I scanned the board for the other choices of play and weighed them before making the wrong choice, 13/8. Funny thing is I was very uncomfortable with 13/8 simply because it looked so wrong, yet I went ahead with it because of the idea I had to stay back.
In hindsight, I should have rethought the merits of my first choice and weighed them against the other choices. I may have made the right play.
I know that part of my problem is the illness I suffer from - clickitus. You can only get infected with this deadly illness from playing online backgammon. Some of the symptoms to know if you have it is the twitching of your finger on the mouse wanting to click way to fast and the constant dinging in your head you hear and feel from the bot when anylising your match. There is a cure, but it takes time and discipline to overcome the effects.
