I know what "magical" gin book you speak of because the first time I saw it I about fell on my ass at the price tag. I'd love nothing more than to play Stuey some gin and see what made him better than anyone in the world. I'll come back to the subject of gin later, I'm just waking up now.
Poker, if you really want to get better and have the time, I suggest you grind it out through the stakes. Small stakes can be frustrating as all shit since people play so bad but it has helped my game overall. As I said, when I started playing I moved up through all the levels so I understand the subtle differences between playing a $25NL game & a $100NL game, $3/$6 limit & $30/$60 limit.
It's always good to have someone you can turn to and ask 'why this' or 'why that' about hands. You can of course post that here and a few people love talking about poker. Any live games around where you live? Poker books only help to introduce you to the game. They can be a learning aid, but not what I'd consider a learning tool. More later maybe...when I wake up (my usual excuse, 3:30PM is just too damn early)
