Our goal is to preserve the current backgammon community, but also to broaden it.

Their actions are about as consistent with their statement of purpose as many of George Bush's. "...preserve the current backgammon community..." When I was a caddy in high school we developed a language which included always saying the opposite of what you actually meant. I guess we weren't the only ones who spoke that language.
