In Response To: Clocks (Bill Riles)

Jason and I talked at length about people timing out. He contended he would hate to see someone time out because of cocked dice and that an allowance should be made to accommodate such. I agree it would be unfortunate to time out because of a cocked die, but I'll guarantee you that you make such an exception and someone will take advantage of it. I'm disappointed that I am becoming increasingly cynical in this regard but I see far too much abuse. Make the penalties severe -- and publicize the violations.

I definitely agree with Bill that somebody might take advantage of it.

What I had proposed was this... since I hate to see somebody time out because they cocked dice, that when somebody is under one minute (or whatever threshold you like), when you cock your dice, you hit the clock to reset your delay. Your opponent then restarts your clock and you get to start over. Bill pointed out (rightly so) that somebody who wants some extra thinking time might cock their dice over and over intentionally.

The harsher viewpoint says, "you let yourself get down to one second of reserve time, it's your own fault." I'm sort of OK with that too.

Ultimately, I don't really have a good solution. One thing is very clear to me... I *hate* to see people losing matches on time. Even though it was completely his own damn fault, what happened to Harvey Gillis feels tragic to me.
