I'd have to make Stick and MCG the co-favorites next year. I was barely able to stumble home to the ABT title vs. MCG, even though I had a healthy 6-0/9 lead early.

Time pressure forced me to make suspect cube decisions and checker plays near the end. I needed to get lucky, and I did.

Going to Europe cost Stick the title probably, but who among us would not have made the same decision to go?

Stick lost to an empty chair in round 1, after leading 8-0 or there would likely be a different ABT Champion in 2009.

I got a bye and won my first match, while my three closest pursuers all lost without byes. Stick still GAINED ground on me and to their respective credit John O'Hagan and Neil and Ed Bennett and Adam Bennett all hung in there tough winning several losers bracket and conso matches in a row.

American backgammon players are very tough, and we can also be successful in overrated Europe... Trust me.
