My philosophy behind the OLM

In Response To: Would the roll change if the readers had voted to cube? (Seth)

I pointed out how ludicrous this scenario is by allowing us to see a roll prior to a cube. If the roll is a good one, we may keep it instead of cubing.

This is primarily an intellectual exercise, not a competition. That's why I assume that people will do it the correct way.

On Kit's site, the same problem exists (and he acknowledges as much), although it's far less transparent.

Think we need a better idea.

I actually agree with you, but I also think you should know and embrace the philosophy behind this project.

Just so that people are clear on where I'm coming from when I proposed this project... I know that I'm only going to get better at BG if I am forced to write my thoughts on positions. Then I can compare what I've written with others' opinions, hopefully people a lot better at BG than me. I can see what sort of features in the position I've over or undervalued in my analysis.

Furthermore, while there are interesting positions that arrive every day on this site, I want to be able to do this on a match in-progress. Kit's site gives a great outlet for that, there's no reason why we can't do it here. We also get a bit more traffic here, so there's more strong players to give opinions.

Backgammon can be a way for a strong player to make a buck, but it's also an intellectual endeavor. Since I've studied mathematics for a long time, I very naturally gravitate towards seeing it as an intellectual challenge. In an abstract way, I see a backgammon problem as a math problem.

I statistics on my own error rates (which aren't good from a WC perspective). In the last year, I've had a measurable drop in my error rates, roughly a 3-5% improvement. It might be statistical noise, but it might also be that I'm getting better at BG. I believe I've started to go about things in the right way, and this project can help that.

In a way, this is all selfish, but it can also help people who are willing to do some of the things I'm doing. We all have different ways of learning BG, but I think this method is fairly universally applicable.
