Thanks for providing us these interesting challenges, Jason.
Even though White has two homeboard blots, I don't think the blot remaining after 18/8 survives enough to be my play.
7/1, 8/4 copies White's technique of building the homeboard by placing two blots there. We certainly wouldn't mind turning this into a race, but the homeboard distribution after this play helps in that case, too.
I believe this position illustrates (or more specifically, is possibly leading to) the downside of the 18-point holding game -- when you lead in the race, you sometimes end up being the one who is held. Of course that doesn't mean we did the wrong thing making that point. Sometimes when your game shifts from behind-in-the-pipcount to ahead, you don't have the option of racing off of it. That's exactly what happened here.
At least we're not suffering from a case of TMP anymore. :)
