I did reroll at the same time. My opponent only stated that my initial roll should stand once I had already rolled again. From my opponent's perspective I would imagine that the pick up and re-roll happened so quickly that he didn't have the time to complain before I rolled. He just acted automatically. I must add that this was a friendly chou (if there is such a thing)and we often pick up our opening roll die as our opponent is playing his move (I'm sure all this would be frowned upon at the Chicago Chouette). Perhaps he thought I was doing that instead of rerolling. I just wanted clarification on whether my opponent's opening misroll colliding with my die would entitle me to a reroll. I think you answered my question. Random is random.
