Hi Bob:

"You would want to use only matches between players with enough games for the rating to have had enough time to reach its true value."

I'm not so sure. If you have a large enough sample size it ought to take care of itself. One of the questions I posed was whether a given difference, say 200 points, turned up with different win percentages at different levels.

I note that the first six responses all focused on "what is the ELO rating system?" That is a fascinating topic, enough so that I wrote a chapter on it. It was only in the sixth response (your first one, Bob) that someone mentioned that no one seems to have checked to see whether the ratings perform as advertised. That got us back to square one, part of my original wish list, and now, three posts later, I am drawing us back to it once again.

It seems we all understand the theory, and understand why it might not work in practice. Wouldn't it be loverly (quoting Eliza) if we had hard data?

Best,

Jake
