I wouldn't recommend 1 ply RO and especially when trying to learn from an opening RO. Also, I did you have VR turned on.

At least a decade ago, we learned that bots on weaker strengths do better with splitting plays than slotting plays since weaker strengths tend to prefer the more race oriented plays. Bot on weaker settings don't play backgames and holdings games as well as on higher settings. One of the reasons for this is that the weaker settings aren't nearly as good at building or finishing the containment needed to lock up the game after hitting late in the game.

As strong as XG is, and that is very strong, 1-ply is about 65 Elo weaker than 3-ply and IMHO, all your RO has shown is to use a stronger ply next time.
