You don't need the 5-point to win this game. However, owning the 5-point could buy more time (i.e. keep opp on the bar long enough) to roll the last escaping 6. About half of White's entering fives {41, 53, 54, 55} are bad no matter what Blue plays this turn. But even some of those offer recovery chances.

Often I find it helpful to ask "if I weren't already slotted but now had the choice of slotting or not, would I?" e.g. same roll but move the slotted checker back to the 7-point and move some other checker up 2 spaces to leave the same pipcount. For me the answer here is 'no'.
