Playoff with 3 finalists - complicated

Good, it seems like your considering my idea to run the Labor Day Tourney as a full Swiss elimination and hopefully with no conso, and hopefully paying all who go 8-3 or better (normally 6, sometimes 7 if 50 entrants)
I have to ask how often and for a normal ammount of entrants do you get only 3 players remaining with exactly two losses? .. ie when I run the spread sheet program for 11 rounds and noting that your 3rd loss means that you can't win the T, I almost never get three 9-2's unless there's considerably more than 50 entrants.
Anyhow, the way I'd treat the lone early bye in the Swiss format when 3 players remain is that this player doesn't get the bye and also gets no compensation. (I am pretty sure, Rob who's running Pitt as full Swiss this year agrees). This may seem harsh if said player loses, but if he does he wins 3rd place and gets paid anyhow.
Fair compensation can easily be calculated between the two eligible for the bye since their equities must be equal.
Once again, my proposed methods for dealing with 3 players left result in a fair distribution of prizes and ABT pts should also be compensated in the same manner to make the bye meaningless in terms of equity. All that the bye means is that it increases the chances of the player who gets it to win the event and trophy.
I have to take a deep look at Joe's method to use unequal match lengths to try to make each of three equals have a 1/3 chance to win the event, but I do think that requires an extra round commonly.
