I'll take a crack at Jim's two positions.

Position 1

Blue

The 25 and 11 point shift right by 1 to score 3+1 = 4

six around the 3 point = -3. total = 1

the five and 16 points both shift right 1, scoring 0 and 3. total = 4

plus 1 pip on the 7 point. Total = 4(1)

White

shift spare on 18 & 12 left by 4

far side (bottom of diagram) is now = 6 + 2(-1) = 7(5)

the six now around 22 = -3. total 4(5)

block of 4 remaining around 17 & 18 = 1. total 5(5)

White (attempt 2)

The points labelled 23 and 1 mirror around Whites midpoint to score 5(5), including the chequer already there.

21 & 17 cancel around S0, as do 22 and 18 (1*3 pips and 3*1 pip).

leaving a total of 5(5)

Position 2

Blue

Shift a pip on 2 and 5 away from each other to create a closed board (-5) with 2 on the 6.

Plus 2 pips for the man on the eight point for a total of -5(2)

White

The 2 active chequers are symmetrical about the midpoint for 2(2).

13 men off is -13 for a total of -11(2)
