Of all of them I've found the most entertaining to be #1 though probably the most time consuming. You'd know more about it than I would if this holds up the calcutta at all. I hate #4 and don't think the bidding would even out in reality. As for #3, maybe it does give people a warm and fuzzy feeling to have a top player in their field but let's take a look at all the winners from the 2009 ABT events. How many of these would you consider top players?
Joe Russell
Mike Corbett
Brent Cohen
David Rubin
Larry Taylor
Tak Morioka
Philippe Salnave
Alan Grunwald
David Rockwell
Ed Bennett
Ray Fogerlund
Carol Joy Cole
Larry Taylor (again)
David Todd
John O'Hagan
Mary Hickey
Julius High
Bob Glass
Neil Kazaross
Victor Ashkenazi
To make a more valid point we'd take anyone who placed where the calcutta money paid out but I'm trying to make a point, not prove one, so this will suffice. Of course there are more random players than top players in a field too, not sure what the standard ratio is, but thinking about it would you expect to see more or less top players in the win column here?
I know it wasn't your question but the way calcuttas have gone by the wayside over the last year or so perhaps it's time to stamp them out and come up with other ideas?
