New Mexico Calcutta

Joe Russell offered a great idea, and I hope we will use it depending on the number of players. We put the top 1/3 in column A and the rest in B.
The winner of the bid selects one player from Column A and one from Column B. When all the A players are gone, the rest of the players in Column B are put on the teams randomly. That way, nobody is picked last and there is no opportunity for an early bidder to pick up the two best players in Column B, resulting in fairer teams and probably more spirited bidding toward the end.
The interesting thing about this tournament, if you look at the players in Open, there is a tremendous field of WC players including several Giants, and there is also a very large list of fairly unknown players who we have not seen in the Open field at other events.
For those of you who really don't like Calcutta's, don't come. For those who do, come. As for those who say the purpose of the Calcutta is to raise money for the organizers, I say that is only one of the purposes. Others include: giving us all a chance to have additional action; having a chance to own a piece of some others; having a chance to feel like you are on a team, and have others to root for and to root for you; and an opportunity to have a little fun at the auction itself. Also, it gives everyone an opportunity to socialize and get to know others a little more.
As for Friday night or Saturday, for many reasons, I strongly prefer Saturday. Many people don't even arrive until Saturday is my strongest reason.
Thanks for all the feedback and ideas....it was stimulating and always great to get the input from so many really experienced players, all of who have strong opinions, and many of whom are often correct (because they agree with me).
