What is the purpose of a Calcutta Auction?

Is it for the TD to make money or is it an opportunity to demonstrate insight into who one believes is a good player?

If it is the latter, then I don't believe the suggestion by Esposito is a good one.

In Denmark I have never experienced a Calcutta Auction. In stead we go to bookie Morten Holm if we want extra action.
