(From memory -- so not 100% exactly what happened:)
I asked the dealer what was up. He said "it's your turn to act". I then said "so, his action is completely irrelevant?" The answer: "no." I said something like "what are the scenarios..." and he said "it depends upon what you do."
At this point I just sat their looking perplexed/annoyed. The dealer then called the pit boss (my term -- what did Stick call him? Floor manager?) and explained what had happened. The FM told me "it's your turn to act."
Now it seems to me I'm not getting anywhere, and not being as persistent of a person as some, I just decided to do SOMETHING so I said "all in".
From an equity standpoint that was NOT the right action, as Daniel pointed out. If I had checked, my opponent would have then been required to repeat HIS "all in" bet and I would then call and take his chips. But when I make a bet, he now can do anything he wants (within the rules), including folding.
LESSONS:
1) poker is not like backgammon or bridge. You apparently have to ask specific questions. Saying "what are my options?" will not get the answer you want.
2) Be persistent. The dealers/etc. want the tournament to proceed as much as you do and it's THEIR problem to make sure that things proceed.
3) Know the rules. This is obviously always important, and I have no excuse, but at poker there are some rules which are not at all standard (the one I've been illustrating is apparently one of them) so you also need to know how to properly ask the dealers/suits to find out what you need. The dealer twice said something like "we are not allowed to affect the play", whatever that means.
Oh, my opponent called my all-in and showed the (straight completing) jack.
