'Early' plane flights

Everyone who enters a tournament knows that if he does well, he may have to play late on Sunday. If he doesn't plan for that, it's his error, NOT the tournament director's.

I had a 5:45 flight last Sunday meaning I had to leave Santa Fe by 3 PM, and we were able to get the doubles finals finished in time. If we couldn't, I was prepared to stay another night. If I could not stay another night, I would have forfeited the finals and blamed no one but myself.

If the situation were reversed and my opponent had to leave, that's his tough luck. I spend a lot of my personal time and money to go to a tournament, and I work my ass off to get good enough to make an occasional Sunday match, and I'll be damned if I will give up my chance because someone else did not plan properly or was not flexible enough to play. What did he/she think was going to happen if he/she won enough matches?

Now, if the tournament dragged on unreasonably because it was poorly run (TD allowed too much slow play, or allowed people still alive to play in side events), then we have other issues.

Hopefully, some day we will have better standards and guidelines to help prevent some of these problems. For example, if a player goes all the way in a side event and a main event, maybe he has to forfeit the finals of the side event to allow people to leave at a reasonable time (or maybe he can hedge the semis and allow the other player to move forward).

Maybe some day clocks with be mandatory, but also, as Nack points out, there will be rules applying to how much time a player can take between matches and games and when the clock is not running.

As for whether Chuck, or I, are assholes for being this way, I maintain that no matter what you do someone will think you are an asshole, so why worry.
