Never really thought about it, but often a non-native speaker sees things that native speakers don't since we learned by simply imitating, not thinking about what we were doing.

I think you nailed it. 'Golden' is a much broader adjective than 'gold', and often doesn't have anything to do with the element Au.

Reminds me of another related occurence. There is a very common North American bird called the 'Canada goose' which lives both there and here (don't know about Mexico). Don't dare call it a 'Canadian goose' unless it actually lives in Canada.
