One surprise was Manning's seemingly flustered attempt to first call the TO and then quickly try and retract his signal. I don't know if the refs called the timeout based upon Manning's motions or whether someone else (e.g. coaches) actually called it.

Not surprising was Phil Simm's comment that (if they score the TD) "because of that TO, now they'll likely HAVE to go with an onside kick". (!!!!) I don't remember exactly how much time was left on the clock but my fuzzy memory says 1:20.

INDY is great on offense making the most of their time without having to use TO's, but your point that they will likely need the TO's to stop the clock if NO has the ball is the key.

I can run this tonight, but bottom line is that in absolute terms it couldn't have cost them much because there was little chance of them winning at that point, anyway. Relatively speaking, though, they did give up a piece of what little equity remained.
