I can usually explain anything once I know the right answer. Next week, when the next rollout shows that not volunteering is correct, I'll happily explain that too.
What I think is going on here is that your winning gameplan is to delay breaking your anchor until the prime in front of it is starting to be dismantled, then run out, get lucky, win the race. What you don't want is to be forced off the anchor while the prime is still in force and with a lurker in the rear to pick up the escapee. Getting hit when yellow rolls a 5 helps with this plan. It allows the spare back checker to move while the anchor is held. If the third checker cannot escape first and black is forced off the anchor, then black will be able to make use of the spare man back as another point on which to reanchor. Either way, it increases the likelihood of having two men anchored up ready to leap when yellow starts bearing in. A bonus in all this is that getting hit also creates situations where you can move a back checker rather than having to further crash the homeboard. If a lucky shot occurs later, that can only help.
