In Response To: Question about time controls (Mislav Radica)

"For those players who play at reasonable pace there is no need for clock."

And for people who obey the laws there is no need for a police force. So why does every society feel the need for one? Because not everyone obeys the laws, and when they don't it affects everyone.

Perhaps if we had Minority Report technology available and could look into the future and tell which matches were going to run too long and just place clocks onto those matches we'd have a perfect system. But we don't so clock all matches.

Clocks improve the mechanics of play even if you give the players unlimited time and no penalties. Simply playing with one shared set of dice that remains on the board when the play is complete eliminates numerous problems such as premature rolling and "what was the roll" questions.
