Bob "I inadvertently hit my clock when I was on the bar against a closed board and the six point opened up. I basically forfeited my turn."
Neil says that you should have asked for a ruling. Most opponents would have let you roll without need for a ruling.
There really needs to a be firm rule here and the rule should state that no player may fail to roll the dice if it is legally possible for him to move. That would solve this recurring problem and eliminate one cause for concern among those new to clocks.
I know one director who rules that the turn cannot be passed in this manner and another who'd rule, "too bad, you hit the clock and your turn is forfeited"
I think Bob's description of this situation being an "artificial quirk" created by clocks is a good one, and I firmly agree that one should not be penalized by this clearly understandable and inadvertent error.
I have a way of making this less likely to happen. When my opponent is closed out, as soon as I clear a point, when I hit the clock, I hit it and keep my hand on it momentarily, to prevent them from just whacking the clock mindlessly.
