This happened to me once in an important Master's match. In this scenario, my opponent graciously promised verbally to add an reasonable agreed upon amount of time back on to the clock at the end of the match, should I flag, rather than fiddle around with the clock, and risk further screwing things up mid-match. I think the time span we came up with was like 30 seconds. It was not exact, but we both felt it was close enough.

This seemed like a simple enough solution at the time, but I would not recommend doing this unless you are positively sure that your opponent will not change his tune in the event this scenario arises. In my case, I had zero doubt that everything would work out, since Mr. Lee was the gentleman sitting across from me.

I don't know that there is a clear cut solution for this scenario, but I do like the idea of developing the habit of jotting down both times on the score sheet immediately after the game ends. It's an ideal solution since the pen is already in your hand to write down the score, AND it forces you to look at the clock at the beginning of this process to make sure it is not still running.

I also don't know whether or not it is coded in the rules that a kibitzer can speak out about these things, but strongly feel that kibitzers should not only be permitted, but OBLIGATED, to bring it to the players' attention that the clock is still running (or at least make a mental note of both times and quickly locate the TD to handle the situation). At the very least, it seems like the sportsmanlike thing to do, IMHO.
