Agreed that clocks don't necessarily help the weaker player. A top-notch player that will remain nameless once took 20-25 minutes against me to make a take/pass decision. He told me afterward (when I asked him what he was thinking about so long) that he was examining all the 36 rolls AND 36 replies and attempting to group those in sets of very bad, bad, neutral, good, very good and weight the groups to come up with an equity.

Clocking that prevents doing this kind of protracted analysis might actually reduce the expert's advantage. (BTW, he got the take/pass decision wrong.)

Old story I heard:
Novice to expert: "Why do you take so long to decide your play?"
Expert: "I have so much more to think about."
