Directors are human too and can make mistakes. That's why there is a provision for appeals committees.

The point I was trying to make in posting the original query is that under the current wording of the rules there is enough ambiguity for a director to come to the conclusion he did, even if the consensus here is the director ruled incorrectly. I reckon lots of odd things have been condoned over the years under the guise of 'an opponent may accept an illegal play'.

The solution is to clearly stipulate in the rules what types of illegal actions can be condoned by an opponent and which simply need to be performed correctly.
