Paul "Just finished playing at 2:15 AM. Gotta play again at 10:00 AM."
Neil replies.. as I understand it, your late night conso match didn't start til 1:00 AM. You had the choice to play either at 9 AM Sunday morning or 1 AM even though the schedule says play resumes at 10 AM Sunday. I presume the reason was that the loser of your conso semis goes into the LC starting at 11 AM, but didn't the loser of your match (you) at least get a bye into the 2nd rd of LC?
I'll say it again that I really hope that these two day events can be completed without having to force players to start matches after midnight on Saturday or prior to 10 AM on Sunday. I will note that something similar happened in the Advanced.
None of us are getting any younger and it becomes harder for many of us to play even our B game at after midnight, let alone continuing past 2 AM, or to play well after only a few hours sleep.
Something just doesn't seem right with the scheduling and while we all appreciate the tremendous effort and dedication the director and staff have to put on a major ABT event, there are ways to improve scheduling. Note also, that staff member(s) have to be present when players are playing and I am sure they'd like not starting matches after midnight or prior to 10 AM Sunday as well.
I am suprised that with the event being clockes on request 2/12 and Bill telling 2 players who's first rd match took quite a while that they had to be clocked for the rest of the event (I suspect he said same to others and was aggressive clocking slow matches) that things ran as late as they did. However, it only takes a couple slow matches compounding to make a big log jam somewhere on the bracket.
How do we alleviate some of this..ie reduce the occurances of very late matches or schedule changes forcing Sunday play prior to 10 AM? Here's a few ideas.
1) Clock mandatory next year in Champ level events and keep in 2/12 for these event that begin on Sat and end on Sun. If there aren't enough clocks then clock mandatory in the 2nd rounds of Main and Conso and onward.
2) Noting that the issue always seems to be caused by consolation and the need to feed everyone who hasn't placed in it into the LC, a progressive LC starting right after one loses in conso, will save time, and free up players for side events. So what if someone goes three and out and doesn't come back Sunday?!! Progressive LC really is a must for these 2 day events.
3) Unless the LC is going to be progressive, I think consideration should be given to reducing the conso from 9 to 7 pts, at least until players are in the money.
4) OK this is nit-picking, but maybe dinner break needs to be 2 hours rather than 2:15. ..ie saving 15 minutes.
5) This is also nit-picking, but the draw needs to be up quicker and players need to be playing quicker. Note also that this fine CSI event, did start reasonably close to the scheduled 12 AM and the Calcutta didn't drag on too long. To get players started quicker on Saturday, the draw can be done and posted more quickly. It isn't necessary to fill out a 64 player draw sheet right away since the computer can print out the draw as who plays whom and this can be posted at several places in the ballroom so players can easily see who there first rd opp is. Then the staff can fill out and post the drawsheet while players are playing rd 1. Of course the draw is supposed to be public, so the random algorithm and computer code to determine the draw should be available. I suspect this could also save 15 minutes.
In summary, 1) Clocks mandatory would speed things up and 2) A progressive LC is an absolute must for these 2 day events with brackets of 64.
.. neilkaz .. again thanking the Chicago directors and staff
