1. We are talking about the TD's common sense; 2. We can offer some guidelines as to what the players think is common sense in many situations. Of course no matter what we come up with, there will always be people who disagree, but we are not and will not ever please anyone.

So, what if the following were proposed as a "suggestion" to tournament directors:

"If either player is not satisfied that his opponent is rolling the dice fairly and appropriate, he may request a baffle box be used at any time. If the baffle box is available, and the tournament director believes it is a reasonable request that would eliminate questions about rolling, the tournament director will allow the use of the baffle box (even if the other player objects)."

In my opinion, this is reasonable. Others may not agree, however, it is ultimately left up to the TD.

By the way, in our Chicago Chou, the baffle box is used every day now. We get almost no cocked dice; no dice on the floor; and nobody is complaining about the other player not shaking his dice or not rolling properly (which was happening frequently and causing bad feelings and raising tensions in the game). And now, players that really didn't like it or objected to it have no problem with it. Once you get used to it, most people really like the baffle box.
