The expected number of rolls is the number of rolls you have to wait on average to roll a 6. Imagine performing an "experiment" where you roll a die until you roll a 6 and repeat it a high number of times. The ration (rolls needed)/trials will converge to 36/11. The use of expectation comes from stats/probability theory. The mean of some stochastic variable X is called the expectation of X and is denoted by EX. You are a favorite to roll a six within 2 rolls, but on average you will have to use 36/11 rolls.
