Director ruling

Bridge is a "gentleman's game", too, but there the players are required to summon a director when an infraction occurs rather than try to resolve it themselves. I realize (or am pretty sure) that bridge has a higher official/player ratio. But having played many BG matches at tournaments, the number of director calls I've seen are relatively few. Maybe it's different at your tournaments, or maybe I've just not been that observant.
Some of us were sitting in Pitt late Saturday night, discussing positions, when a verbal dispute occurred at a nearby table. Initially we made the mistake of doing nothing and the dispute became more heated. Eventually Neil tried to intervene but after about 15 seconds it was pretty clear to me that his efforts were failing so I headed to the directors' stand (in a different room) to find Rob. It still took Rob several minutes to calm things down, even though it took him less than a minute to decide what happened and a course of action.
I wonder how many disagreements would escalate out of control if the players were required to pay a $50 fine as you suggest.
