Director ruling

So to save the director from doing his/her job, we allow the entire room to be disrupted?
Is there a judgment to be made as to what constitutes a reasonable director call? I've called the director on occasion when it wasn't clear to me how a rule should be interpreted and on other (more, actually) occasions when it was clear to me that my interpretation and my opponent's interpretation were at odds.
I'd be very curious as to A) how many director rulings are typical for a weekend event, and B) how many of those rulings were initiated by some kind of 'petty' disagreement and how many were legitimate calls vs. how many were for an uncontentious clarification of the rules.
The bottom line is that if you threaten players with fines for calling a director, even if it's up to the director whether the fine should be levied (based upon the pettiness of the disagreement), you will definitely get fewer director calls, but at a cost to all participants. IMO, a smoother running event should the overriding goal.
