Backgammon rules

In Response To: Backgammon rules (lenny)

Part of the problem with the rules is that we really need 3 different sets of rules:

1. Money play/non-tournament play/"friendly" play

2. Tournament play--reasonable rules that keep tournaments moving at a reasonable pace but are not highly restrictive and nasty and technical and turn people off on tournament play

3. Tournament play for Open and Masters--at this level, where there is more serious play, more serious money, and only experienced players, we can and should have more specific and technical rules that ensure fair play. Players at this level should be able to understand and accept clock rules, the need for proper shaking and rolling, restrictions on checker movement to prevent errors (and cheating), etc.

Trying to apply one set of rules for all three areas of play is, in my opinion, what causes much of the problem.
