Backgammon rules

The rules are the rules. I believe the rules are fair. What has flexibility in my opinion is tolerance for ignorance of the rules. Beginners are likely to have no clue about the fast rolling rules and a director should be prepared to teach the players about proper etiquette and what the rules are and what the penalties are, etc. and not screw the person immediately just because of their ignorance. Open players should know exactly what the rules are and ignorance is no excuse. Yes, I think an opponent should point out fast rolling and request it be stopped when it first occurs, and not silently tolerate 20 fast rolls and then spring the penalty on the 21st.

Speeding is a well defined violation with clear penalties. The police officer can still choose not to give you a ticket. The judge can agree to reduce the fine. Common sense and fairness and consideration of the circumstances should always be part of the equation. No set of rules should replace the director's good judgment.
