Rules of backgammon

One player would hold his dice between his thumb and forefinger and release the dice. Often he would release them below the baffle box opening which allowed him to bypass one ore more baffle impediments. Another player placed the dice on the palm of his hand. This particular player had the flattest palm you had ever seen. He would then tilt his hand slightly to roll the dice into the baffle box. Because the baffles were diagonal in only one dimension, the effect was that the dice would roll randomlay for 4 numbers but the sides of the dice remained in their original position. We were also aware that certain players were winning an extraordinary amount of the time and seemed to get the tolls they needed and crucial times. We mentioned this to one of the local players who stated of course many of the players were manipulating the dice. Joe Russell and I witnessed a mind numbing exhibition by this player. He was giving an impersonation demonstration of various players at the club and their particular style of rolling the dice. He would say "Suppose Joe Blow needs a 6-5, this is how he would roll the dice." BOOM 6-5. "Suppose Hairy Larry needs a 3-2." BOOM 3-2. This demonstration went on for twenty minutes and the player seemed to be able to roll various numbers at will imitating the rolling styles of these other players. Joe and I then started demanding cups through the box. These other players that we suspected of manipulating the dice balked vehemently at this suggestion and stated that using cups through the box was redundant. Since it was universally believed that baffle boxes were cheat proof, many of these players would literally set the dice on certain numbers before rolling and no one would object. So Joe and I took extraordinary measures. We started paracticing using the box and would set the dice. We started to do this openly in our chouettes shouting the number we needed and obviously setting the dice. Although we were not as talented as the other aforementioned players, we definitely improved our rolling beyond what would be considered random. The other players startted getting annoyed at us and the cups through the box rule was initiated. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Postscript! The two players that were terrorizizing the club the most with their incredible dice rolling over a two year period both went broke after we initiated the rule.
