Another director ruling

When you have a game or sport with officials, the players do not have the same responsibility to be fair and honest with each other than when you and your opponent are the "officials." Good sportsmanship and fair treatment of each other is not only a nice way to be, it is EXPECTED. If your opponent won the match but there was a mix up in the score, HE STILL WON THE MATCH and YOU have an obligation to give it to him.
This "ideal" has not been clear in the past because we have never had "self-imposed" rules of conduct and good sportsmanship guiding us and giving us these principles.
This is one reason why the USBGF expanded the "Rules Committee" to include "Ethics." Soon you will see a formal Standards of Ethical Practice with guidance for situations just like this...and it will clearly state that players are expected to be fair with each other, even if that means calling a ruling that is not to their own advantage.
This will, we hope, encourage players to be fair with each other, and in the situations where they are not, it will help the TD's help the players understand their responsibilities and will help them rule against the player that does not demonstrate good sportsmanship.
If I lose a gammon and my opponent accidentally scores it as a single game, IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY to correct him. And if I do not, and it is discovered later that the game was scored improperly, whether it can be proven that I intentionally failed to mention it or not, I should give my opponent the points because he earned them and deserved them, and he should not lose that because of a mistake with the pencil.
That example is no different from the one above. The match was won, and the winner deserves his victory, and the other player should give it to him graciously. If he does not, hopefully, a good tournament director will help him see his responsibility to do so.
