The others are all correct; the two situations are different. Without clocks, when your opponent opens his 6 point, you must roll to actually have a turn. Now if you roll a 6 and pick up your dice, then yes, that's an illegal play that can be condoned. With clocks, you can't really have your turn until you roll your dice, so hitting your clock doesn't end your turn; you never had your turn to begin with. It's just a procedural error and you need to roll.
