As I reported here a few days ago, there is little difference between the Rockwell/Kazaross and Woolsey tables. But why in principle is Rockwell/Kazaross superior ?

Phil Simborg quotes David Rockwell as saying: "All values in the table are the result of computer rollouts using GNU. In that respect, there are no assumptions used. The value in this approach is that it captures subtleties, to the extent that the software plays correctly."

When I am playing a person (as opposed to a bot), I would have thought it better to use a table like Woolsey's which is constructed from empirical data about how people play (for example, insufficient aggression in going for gammons) than from the play of a bot.

I am sure that Rockwell/Kazaross is a considerable achievement but I have never seen the rationale for it. So I'd be interested to learn this.
