My guess as to the average U.S. open event player's XG ER would be closer to 6. I guesstimate a master events average player's XG ER is closer to 5 than to 4.

Regarding Phil's comments about the top players of years ago being competitive, it is hard to compare different eras in anything. In sports, you always have the argument about how the game, the equipment, the competition, the training, and various other things(steroids,etc) have changed. Using a baseball reference, the bots have revolutionized backgammon like the corked ball did hardball. Some of the most talented players to ever play the game played in the pre-bot era. Their error ratings may not have been as low as the top players of today, but many had a natural talent that many of today's top players would envy were there no bots to have trained on.
