Are Byes Fair? Is Life Fair?

I'm not sure what a person's name has to do with the way byes are allotted.

Anyway, auctioning off byes might sound like a good idea, but it creates additional complications.

Firstly, it would have to be done prior to the Calcutta auction and then you'd probably have to auction the byes separately from the non-byes.

Secondly, there's more at stake than just the prize pool. People are also potentially playing for ABT points, and those should not be for sale to the highest bidder. That is what also makes a buy-back format somewhat unfair as well. Of course, those things are no less unfair than the edge obtained by people who have no family or work obligations and who can afford to travel to every tournament.

Life's not fair. But the playing field should be as level as possible.
