Byes are fair simply because they're random. Everybody has the same chance of receiving a bye. If you allow byes to be bought or auctioned off, the draw is no longer random. As I stated before, I don't think it's fair to allow the better players to occupy a larger part of the draw sheet which is what most likely would happen if byes could be bought. Imagine if Mochy, Falafel, and Neil could each buy a quarter of the draw sheet at the "fair" price. I don't think the rest of the participants would be too happy. We may be talking about one round only in the case of a bye, but the general principal remains the same.
