I fail to see how entering the finals with .4 winning chances is a better deal for you than entering the round of 8 with .064 winning chances - unless it is maximizing chances of winning the trophy that is the only measure of a good deal. In that case buy all 8 spots and claim the trophy.

Assuming a $8000 prize pool. Your expected winnings entering the final is .4*8000 = $3200; less your $4000 entry is a -$800 equity. Entering in R8 your expected winnings is .064*8000 = $512; less your $1000 entry is a -$488 equity. The latter is higher equity as I see it.
