Potential 234 backgame

Back in the old days I hit twice, trying to prevent the opponent from making his bar point. I wanted to go a little forward and play some kind of a holding game or perhaps a backgame of some sort in case I was hit and things went poorly. Here holding the enemy bar point would be great for recirculating checkers.
I have played the position a lot, both making the anchor and also double hitting.
While double hitting is not terrible it will lead to a super complicated position where you are likely to make many errors, simply because of the number of tricky positions you're faced with. All the time you need to figure out if you want to go forward or backwards. With both sides having some structure and several men back these are super tricky positions.
1 downside to hitting is that you actually recirculate the badly placed checker on the 24 point. This checker is sitting in the worst possible place - so why not leave it there.
Despite hitting the badly placed checker on the 24 point, I honestly believe that double hitting would be ok if one was guaranteed of playing the subsequent positions ok.
As Robertie points out, the front structure is a little too weak to really sustain going forward.
Here is my take on making the anchor:
- It semi kills a lot of the opponents checkers.
- The opponent will very rarely have more than a 4 prime.
- It is not too difficult to recirculate the checkers from the 22 point. Making the anchor you will end up in a 2,3,4 back game some times, but most times you will have a 2,3 back game with perfect timing.
- This position is a lot easier to play: spring your spare, build a prime and wait for your shot. Don't hit anything until the front structure is good enough to contain the hit checker. If necessary break the 22point anchor for more timing. By then the opponent will likely already have several checkers buried on the 24 point.
My verdict now is to make the 22 point because it is best and because the subsequent positions will be super much easier to play.
