Phones & BG

You get doubled in a clocked match. You think about the position for a while, count it, rub your chin, etc. Then you ask permission to take a picture of the position, pull out you iPhone, take the picture, immediately put your iPhone back in your pocket (without looking at it or operating it). You then accept (or pass) the cube and hit the clock.

An innocent backgammon situation that we have all seen a hundred times before.

Except this time, your double decision was actually a result of a gnubg 2-ply evaluation, using an interpolated Jacobs MET for +25 rating points, because that was the one you felt came closest to the actual matchup!

The above tool could easily be coded today. Gnubg already works fine on the iPhone. The camera is there, and the iPhone has plenty of power to "read" a picture taken of your own board (board, checkers, cube and play-direction are known/trained up front). The interface for take/pass readout is the iPhone vibrator, you put in your pocket while it analyzes, when done it vibrates once for take, twice for pass.

I know plenty of people who have the skills to do this.

I have never declined an opponent who asked permission to photograph a position.

I guess it should be a custom, that you always declare your action before you take the picture. I do that myself.
