If it bothered you, you should have let him know it bothered you and ask him to put the phone away. If he refused, then ask the director to decide what is appropriate.

If it didn't bother you, and thought it was more of a distraction to him than you, then let him fiddle.

I found it mildly annoying, but there wasn't any question at all that my opponent was FAR more distracted than I was by it, so I was fine with letting it continue.

Now, in my iPhone I have match equity tables, gammon values, the Trice Formula, hitting tables, and take points. I study these or use them to check myself between matches. It would be easy for me to take a bathroom break and cheat by using these tools during a match...(I don't by the way)....so phone or not, there is little to be done to completely stop cheating of this nature.

You don't need an iPhone for all that. Just some notes scrawled on an index card stuffed in your back pocket for easy reference while taking a dump between games would suffice.
