Cubeless bakgammon

It is semantics to say it is two different games or just different rules. The point is, they have many similarities and many differences.
Is Nackgammon a different game or just the same game with a different start? Semantics.
When I was a kid, I learned to play backgammon without the cube and I played that way for a long time. We kept score different too...you got a point for every checker your opponent had left when your last checker was off.
When I first learned about the cube I didn't like it, but I got used to it and now prefer it strongly. I still miss the other way of scoring and still think there is real merit to playing that way!
Wouldn't it be fun to play a match to 100 points, with the doubling cube, and you get points for every checker your opponent didn't get off X the value of the cube, and you get double the value for gammons and triple for backgammons? Wouldn't it be fun to play for money that way?
Would that be a different game? Certainly it would change the strategy. In the current game, it could be argued that it's not fair to win a point when you have 15 checkers off and he has 14 off, and still only win a point when you get 15 off and he has only 1 off.
