Cubeless bakgammon

In my opinion the checker play is close enough to the same that it does not make a difference at all but the highest levels. So no point focusing on these differences until people are extremely comfortable playing with the cube.

Agreed that the skill of cube play itself is a very large factor.

My suggestion for introducing the cube is to play the matches both ways simultaneously - keeping two scoresheets. The cubeful match will always finish at the same time of earlier than the cubeless variant so nobody has to keep playing only cubeful. Any prizes or points you might award can remain based upon the cubeless outcome. So where it matters people stay in their comfort zone. But you can also keep w/l stats on cubeful results. People will start to get a feel for cube play while playing their normal game and will have the benefit of dropping cubes and seing the game played out.

I would play without backgammons even cubeful. One thing at a time. And learning bgs is easy when the time is right.
