Another example of the difficulty of image recognition: the Los Angeles MTA once looked into developing a system to count passengers getting on and off their buses. The data was to be used tweak bus schedules and the like. They spent several years on this and a heap of money, offering competing contracts to several different companies. In the end, a reliable solution evaded them. It was simply too difficult to distinguish people from bags of groceries, canes, backpacks, etc. And they weren't even trying to discern anything about the people, just trying to recognize their shape or outline, using an array of sensors at fixed angles in a well-defined space. The reported numbers were all over the map. This was years ago, so I expect they've finally come up with something, but these types of things can be surprisingly challenging.
