You are correct that to come up with the right checker play you do some sort of 'computation' of the numbers of wins vs. gammons lost and other factors especially involving gammons.

However, I think if you ask a competent cubeless BG player from the Middle East what goes through his mind when choosing a play that wins more games and loses more gammons, I doubt there are a lot of numbers flying around in his head. It's probably more like "I win *enough* more here to risk the gammon losses."
