but I really don't think we can rule out the possibility that steering towards backgames is right much more often than we currently think it is. We're just not good enough at assessing how well a perfect player can maintain his timing in complex positions.

I don't know how often you think it's correct to steer towards backgames but against a solid player I think it's extra rare to take this route if there's another available option. It's not that me, the perfect player, can't maintain my timing as good as I'd like to, it's that when playing even a well timed backgame you're almost always 1 bad dice sequence away from "oh fuck". Repeat how long you need to maintain your timing and you're more often than not screwing the pooch more than you'd like.
